Ethan is 8

Ethan turned 8 yesterday. He is certainly as rowdy as ever and wanted to ‘do something’ with some of his buddies for his birthday. That lead us on a search for indoor activities since, well, we live in Seattle and it’s winter. As it turned out, it was 60 and sunny yesterday so who knew we would’ve had so many more options. We landed on ice skating and Ethan chose 3 of his new friends (Andy, Evan, Rohin) to join him and his brothers for some partying. As with any time we get the guys out one of our main objectives is to run their energy tanks empty. You would think that 3 hours of skating in circles would do that but they still had plenty left over to devour the cookie dessert platter @ BJ’s pizza.

Enjoy the pics… Jen will have them on here soon.

RIP “LEGO Piece”

Elias brought home 4 White Cloud fish from school the week before Christmas break. We put them in a fish bowl and admired them for a few days.

Then, they were ignored for a couple of weeks. When the stench became too much to handle, I finally changed the water. And 3 of the 4 fish did not survive the shock of the water change. But, the last one dubbed ‘LEGO Piece’ by Elias, “because he’s as small as a LEGO piece,” endured… until last Friday, that is.

I learned how to change the water properly and LEGO Piece made it through the 2nd change, but he was not so lucky on the 3rd. We returned home from another follow-up appointment with the doctor* when Elias said, “Mom, what’s wrong with LEGO Piece - he looks like he’s dead.”  Well son, that’s because he is, in fact, dead.

Now, I need to back up a bit and explain that when each of the previous 3 fishes died, no one really noticed. I simply flushed each one down the drain when it stopped swimming & started floating. Eventually, the boys noticed we only had one fish left, but it really wasn’t that big of a deal.

But, maybe because ‘LEGO Piece’ had a name, maybe because he was the survivor, maybe because Elias was the one to notice - his death mattered. Elias became very sad & mopey so I thought maybe we needed to have a funeral to say goodbye. So I asked him, “Do you want to have a funeral for ‘LEGO Piece’, you could say something nice & then we’ll flush him down the toilet.”

He replied, “No, but can we bury him… in a box… in my room?”

I explained that he could not keep a dead fish in his room and we compromised on a good place outside by the fort.

“Can we make him a grave stone, Mom?”

Sure. We found a nice rock & wrote on it with red sharpie “LEGO Piece RIP” and added a stone from the fish bowl gravel.

I’m not sure how much this process helped Elias feel better, though. When I asked him to take a nap later in the day (since he’s still recovering from pneumonia) he was in his bed crying, “I just really miss LEGO Piece.” It was sad, but at the same time made me think we need to be sure to give the boys (mostly Elias) a realistic view of the lifespan of a fish, if we get anymore. At least he got to say goodbye?

*BTW - Elias is still on the slow road to full recovery from pneumonia. He had follow-up blood tests done at his appointment last Friday and the results were better (not normal, yet - but better.) We will return for another visit, but this time in two weeks. (He was happy to hear he didn’t have to get a ‘needle’ for a bit longer this time.) He has returned to school, but still laying low on physical activity. Thanks so much for all the prayers!!

more than a pneumonia update

I do need to begin with an update on Elias. We saw the doctor twice this week. After all the tests came back from his follow-up blood work last week, the doctors were still rather concerned with his lack of progress toward healing. So, they asked us to come back Tuesday to get another x-ray view of his lung which showed that there was still a significant amount of fluid in his lung. At that point they decided to wait until Friday to do another blood test to see if there was any more progress. If not, the possibility for them to admit him again for IV antibiotics was pretty high. But, we returned for more blood work yesterday and his levels looked a bit better. The doctor was also impressed with Elias’ energy level. Needless to say, Elias was relieved and overjoyed with the fact that he didn’t have to go back to the hospital. We will follow-up with his doctor again next week & another blood test. He’s getting pretty good at them even though he still “cries just a little bit.”

The “more than a pneumonia update” part is much more exciting… We’ve finally made plans to return to Mesa for a visit. The boys have spring break from school at the end of March & Ryan is doing his triathlon in Havasu again this year, so we thought it would make for a great time to get the trailer back out for a road trip. We’re planning to head to Havasu March 17th, then on to Boulder City, NV to see Granny & Grandpa John (and allow Ryan to work a couple of days in Vegas) March 21st. Then we’ll drive to Mesa on March 24th and stay through the 30th-ish. We would love to see as many friends as possible that week. Please let us know if you & your kids are available for a play date. Of course, we’ll be enjoying some Barro’s on at least a couple of occasions and we’d love for you to join us. We’re also looking forward to seeing some sun while we’re there, so if you could work on drying everything up over then next month that would be much appreciated. :) It seems Arizona has received more rain over the last week than we have here in Seattle. How… ironic.

pneumonia - week 2 update

Yesterday marks 2 weeks since Elias was admitted to Seattle Children’s Hospital with Pneumonia. He finished up his last antibiotic yesterday and had another follow-up appointment with his doctor today. He’s been a bit more energetic, eating & sleeping pretty well so we were hoping to start sending him to school (for at least half-days) starting next week. But despite these good signs, this Pneumonia is proving to be a bit harder to kick than we expected. The doctor ordered a follow-up X-ray & blood work which indicated that even though he is getting better, the progress is still very slow. He still needs a lot of rest and we need to watch him closely for fever or any difficulties breathing. Your continued prayers for his complete healing are much appreciated!
